Mother and the Manufacture of Anxiety has been a form of exploration and expression of myself through making. The work addresses my experience of anxiety
both as a person and practitioner, and how my relationship with my mother feeds into that.
This work was created by taking my feelings of anxiety and creating objects from those emotions to examine it further. The steel frames act as my body and the
latex represents the push and pull of anxiety and all the different ways it manifests itself in me. The MOTHER hook is this positive presence that pulls me back
up and counter – balances all these smaller hooks.
“My works are portraits of a relationship, and the most important one was my mother. Now, how these feelings for her are brought into my interaction
with other people, and how these feelings for her feed into my work is both complex and mysterious. I'm still trying to understand the mechanism.”
